Welcome! Whether or not you are military, and whether or not you have swum before, our team has a place for you!

This site is full of information, so if you have limited time, just make sure you read "About MAV" and "This Season."  Information about equipment and clothing items can be found at the "Team Items" link under "Categories."  Posts appear from newest to oldest right underneath this one.  We make announcements at practice, but other than there, this site is our primary means of communication.

See you at the pool!

Note: no practice

There will be no practice Friday, May 23, or Monday, May 26th.

Fee Structure

Please Download fee_structure_may08.doc

Follow along with the chart:

1.  We have two levels of athletes:  Competitive and Non-competitive (adults, military, and parents.  You choose your level.

2.  We have two practice sites.  Each site has a different method of payment for pool usage (the facility charge).

3.  If you are competitive, you will be paying Maverick Aquatics for coaching and competition - whether or not you practice at one or both pools.  If you are non-competitive, you will be paying Maverick Aquatics for coaching only and per site.

4.  Competitive athletes owe per meet entered.  Please check out the meet schedule and download meet forms.  Notify the coach at least 3 weeks in advance of meets you will be attending.  You can find out what you owe at the meet and pay by the end of the last day of competition.

5.  USA Swimming is the governing body for competitive swimming.  These registration dues are required for competition.  It does offer some insurance protection.

Feel free to ask questions if this is confusing to you!

CMSA Meet Info

This is from CMSA: We appreciate you all entering the CMSA LC Invitational.

1. Link to our meet information site: http://www.swimcmsa.com/index.php?page=97. On this site, you will find a basic psych sheet, time line information, and warm-up assignments.

2. Warm-up Change - One special change is the warm-up and meet start times. Here is a basic idea of the warm-up times and start times for each session as dictated by the current time line reports. Saturday Session Two is a change from the meet sheet - PLEASE NOTE! Saturday Session One: 11am Warm-up, 12pm start time Saturday Session Two: 2:30pm Warm-up, 3:30pm Start time Sunday Session Three: 8am Warm-up, 9am Start Time Sunday Session Four: 12pm Warm-up, 1pm Start Time

3. The time lines look great. We should not have to scatch any of the 400 Free's which is really nice.

4. We expect some late entries to come in over the next couple of days. I will update the psych sheet posted online after this weekend to reflect any late entries that come in.

5. We are only having one warm-up session for 50 minutes. Warm-up assignments are posted on the link above.

Team Records

The records have been updated to reflect the new ones achieved in the past season.  If you think you have broken a record, please double-check me to make sure these records are correct.  If you think you may be close, check out your age group and work hard in practice to better these standards!

May-July Meet Schedule

In order to swim well this summer, you need to be training NOW.  Waiting until school gets out will make your season only 5 weeks long.  That's not long enough to build enough endurance for a successful taper.  For this reason, if you intend to go to SES and/or AAU, we will not accept you on the trip unless you are training consistently by April.  Let's start training seriously for our summer championships today.

Also, please plan family vacations accordingly.  It is best to wait until after SES and AAU Jr. Olympics to take time away.

Please download the mayaug_2008_meet_schedule_signup.doc and return to us so that we can sign you up for meets in a timely manner.

July

17-20 SES, Nashville - must qualify

29-Aug 1  AAU Junior Olympics, Detroit, MI - swimmers who meet or beat the USA Swimming long course “A” minimum time standard for all 200M, 400M and 1500M events and "BB” time standards for events under 200M are eligible to compete.  (We are considering this meet because it is after our target meet, SES, this year.  We will not accept swimmers on this trip who qualify for the SES meet and choose not to go; if you make SES, that is your championships.)

ECS Swim Meet

We had an excellent meet.  In fact, there were comments from other teams that they should start dryland training to try to match our success!  We have had some great dryland training that is increasing our strength, balance, and flexibility, but as we know, it is a combination of hard work, overcoming obstacles, swimming, technique expertise, and dryland that gets us to the top.  Let's keep up the good work.

We earned 3rd overall team high point - quite a feat with our small numbers!  We only had 12 swimmers, so this is a testament as to how well we did.

Every morning swimmer earned lifetime best times due to an improvement in stroke technique.  We are pround of them for demonstrating streamlines, cleaner lines, stretching out, and flip turns.  I especially want to mention Megan Yourkavitch's ability to make instant corrections from verbal instructions without practice, and Ashley Sluss' significantly smoother strokes.  Good job to Kathleen McGovern for streamlining - doing 19 good streamlines out of 20 in her 500 free.  Jared and Andrew Sluss impressed us with their technique that emerged with the concentration they had during racing.  Maria McGovern, only 6, showed discipline with her breathing pattern throughout her races.  Travis Osier showed he is learning to race; he negative split his 200 free and ended up dropping 22 seconds!

Congratulations to Josh Williams for a new meet record, to Jared and Andrew Sluss for new team records, and to the high point winners:  Teresa Parsons, Josh Williams, Matt Schade, Chrissy Parsons, Tonya Rasor.

Swim practices available at Eglin

Good news!
We had a meeting at Eglin today and are going to start swimming, pending paperwork, on Thursday, Dec. 13.  Our practice time is 4:00-6:00 p.m.  Our older, more experienced swimmers will swim 4-6.  Our younger group (Tonya's group) will swim 5-6.

We are in the process of getting in our paperwork and access rosters and this is a rush job, but they anticipate everything being ready on Thursday.

The terms of the contract are that each swimmer sign in every day and pay $2 every day they come to swim.  This means each swimmer will be paying a maximum of $4 a week.  We are only swimming on Monday and Thursday of each week.  The holiday schedule will be separate and forthcoming.

Dues for Maverick will stay as unchanged as possible.  We will, until we are back in Hurlburt, be charging $50 a month to Maverick per swimmer. This will cover team competitive fees and fees for the dryland practices.  We plan to continue to do dryland on Tuesdays and Fridays.  I encourage EVERYONE to participate in dryland.  We have shown, without a doubt, that dryland can keep us very competitive during times lacking in swim
training.  Just check out the results of the Excel meet, especially Josh Williams, and you'll see what we mean.

Reminder to check here http://www.seswim.org/docs/docs/2008athletes.pdf, to see if you are registered for 2008.  We are planning to enter the GPAC meet in January by next week, so I need to know who would like to go.  All currently registered swimmers will be entered in our team meet at the YMCA at the end of January.  All swimmers of SES caliber (those that have current SE cuts or are trying to make them) will be entered in the ATAC meet the first weekend in Feb.  Please check the meet schedule, download
the sign up form, and get those in.  We are back in business folks!

Access to Base for non-military - Importance: HIGH

Access procedures have changed for us.  Effective December 1st, non-military will need to have the new forms.  Please fill out a form for each person that requires access to Hurlburt Field over the age of 10.  Follow this link to obtain the form.  You will need Adobe Reader to open the form.  You will be able to fill in the form and save it.  If you require assistance, please call Bill Williams at 850-243-5108 or email him at wiliam.d.williams@cox.net.  This must be done this month for you to get a pass in January.  Whether you are currently active or not, if you plan on training at all next season and you do not have base access, you need to do this.

If you get a chance, check out the latest On the Coast Magazine for Oct/Nov.  There is an article by Coach Tonya about Coach Dan's presentation on exercise to a group of seniors. One of our senior team members, Susie Puffer, is featured.

Tonya also has an article, When your swimmer literally chokes:  How to recognize and manage Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) published in this month's American Swim Coaches Association publication.
