Practice arrangements on Monday, Labor Day

We will not have practice at Eglin due to "Holiday Hours" of operation.

However, weather permitting, if you wish to join us at 10:00 a.m. at Okaloosa Island's Beasley Park for an hour and a half of beach dryland (running, abs, legs, core work) you are quite welcome to.  A group of us may be going out to Tijuana Flats for lunch after the workout.

Otherwise, have a safe holiday weekend.

Practice the week of Aug. 25; meet entries due

Folks,
As many of you know my wife's grandmother passed away recently.  This coming holiday weekend I am fulfilling family obligation and helping move furniture and take care of Grandma's belongings.  As such, there will be no practice on Friday.  Most of you will not be there anyway due to the Holiday.

However, if there is enough interest, we will either try to swim on Monday at some point, or maybe do a beach dryland workout or something.  Eglin will be on Holiday hours on Monday, so I am not sure if we will be able to practice or not, which is why I give the option of either a Hurlburt workout (if available) or a dryland workout.

Please give me feedback as to the interest and scheduling for what you would like to do.  We'll try to have a decision made by Thursday and post it.

Additionally, please remember to get your meet forms and USA Swimming registration forms in.  I have to enter our next meet this week.

message from Coach Tonya

Hello Team!

This is Coach Tonya.  I just wanted to write a letter addressed to all of you before I leave for school.  Most of all, I want to commend you on your continued diligence and performance throughout the season.  I have heard some great things!  You have certainly kept up the MAV tradition of wowing our competitors!  Dropped times, dryland during a lightening break, camaraderie in a rainstorm, younger swimmers putting on a show at PNY and the older swimmers at ATAC - this is what we are known for!  And I must say I am thrilled at the growth of our novice/younger team.  Swimming is such a valuable life-long sport.

I am going to start working toward a PhD in Sports Psychology at Florida State University.  As many of you know, I swam for FSU as an undergrad, so it is exciting to be on the other side!  This has been my goal for 4 years now.  For these last 4 years I have coached Niceville High School (also with Coach Dan), taught a sports psychology class for those swimmers and, of course, coached your team.  Those were the short term goals on the way to my long term goal, a PhD.  I learned goal-setting from swimming, and I encourage you to keep setting yours!

That said, I miss you guys.  As teammates and as swimmers under Coach Dan and my coaching, you have challenged me, inspired me, kept me laughing, been there when it was grueling and when it was care-free, and only increased my love for the sport - what a powerful gift when I am devoting my career to the mental side of sports!  Thank you.

I also miss coaching beside Coach Dan.  He never ceases to amaze me with his ability to teach and to reach all levels of swimmers to bring them to their best.  He has a talent in coaching that goes beyond experience and education.  Don't forget to thank him!  After years of swimming under him, it has been a privilege to coach with him.

All the best,

Coach Tonya

Jared Sluss earned a 4th place medal in the 400 meter freestyle mixed relay.  His leg time of 1:28.14 beat his best individual 100M free time by nearly 6 seconds.

The big day is tomorrow, Ashley has 100M backstroke and 50M breaststroke, and a 200M Free mixed relay, and Jared has his only individual event, 50M Breaststroke, and a 200M Free mixed relay.

Updates as they happen

We are winding down to the end of the summer.  School is just around the corner.  However, we have new kids coming out for the team every day.  Some items of interest:

1.The Seastars in Pensacola have scheduled their meet that is usually in Sept. for Aug. 16,17.  This is an absolutely fabulous meet for the beginning of the short course season.  It is also great for beginning swimmers.  We have set a goal to have 25 of our 30 plus swimmers at this meet.  Please consider going even if it is for just one day.  Contact me via email or written note if you would like to participate.  I need to know by Thursday this week.

2. Practices for the fall will be as follows (until the end of High School season).  Tuesday and Friday afternoons at Hurlburt.  3:30-5:30 for older kids, 4:30-6:00 for younger kids.  Monday and Thursday afternoon at Eglin 4-6 p.m.  Tuesday and Friday a.m. at Eglin 5-6 (I have to check on the days for morning...it may change.)Please note, there are several schedules impacting our swimmers.  If you cannot strictly conform to these  practice times, NOT A PROBLEM!  Show up when you can, where you can, and we'll work with it.  I would like to see everyone as consistently as possible even with school and high school swimming.  If you can only make 45 minutes to an hour, fine!  We want you here!

3. After the high school season is complete (mid November) we should be moving to three mornings a week and one afternoon a week at Eglin, and three afternoons a week at Hurlburt.  Days and times are still being worked on.

4. Registration for the year 2009 for USA swimming is going to take place in September for us.  Please be ready...it is a $50 fee for each person.

5. Coach Tonya is off to FSU soon to work on her PhD (she's always been very smart!).  Please don't forget to send her some "good luck's" and "well-wishes."  We all hope she can visit, swim, and coach periodically for us on breaks as she continues her education.
