ECS Swim Meet

We had an excellent meet.  In fact, there were comments from other teams that they should start dryland training to try to match our success!  We have had some great dryland training that is increasing our strength, balance, and flexibility, but as we know, it is a combination of hard work, overcoming obstacles, swimming, technique expertise, and dryland that gets us to the top.  Let's keep up the good work.

We earned 3rd overall team high point - quite a feat with our small numbers!  We only had 12 swimmers, so this is a testament as to how well we did.

Every morning swimmer earned lifetime best times due to an improvement in stroke technique.  We are pround of them for demonstrating streamlines, cleaner lines, stretching out, and flip turns.  I especially want to mention Megan Yourkavitch's ability to make instant corrections from verbal instructions without practice, and Ashley Sluss' significantly smoother strokes.  Good job to Kathleen McGovern for streamlining - doing 19 good streamlines out of 20 in her 500 free.  Jared and Andrew Sluss impressed us with their technique that emerged with the concentration they had during racing.  Maria McGovern, only 6, showed discipline with her breathing pattern throughout her races.  Travis Osier showed he is learning to race; he negative split his 200 free and ended up dropping 22 seconds!

Congratulations to Josh Williams for a new meet record, to Jared and Andrew Sluss for new team records, and to the high point winners:  Teresa Parsons, Josh Williams, Matt Schade, Chrissy Parsons, Tonya Rasor.

SAST Meet

It was the first meet of the season and the first meet ever for many of our swimmers!  Congratulations to those swimmers who competed in their first meet:

Travis Osier, Kathleen McGovern, Maria McGovern, Grace Howell, Kate Sudduth, Emma Breeze

We had a lot of fun and did very well.  Kathleen, in her first meet ever, scored 6th in two events.  And the 10 & under freestyle relay (Kathleen, Grace, Kate, Emma) captured 5th!

Noteably, Teresa Parsons dropped chunks of time in nearly every event and won high-point.

Tonya Rasor also won high-point for her age group.

Dan Kaster had his birthday on on the first day of the meet, Saturday.  You should have seen him beating those young'uns!

SES LC 2007

We swam great at SES!  Tonya Rasor was 11th in the 200 butterfly (in a lifetime best!) and 13th in the 100 butterfly. Matt Schade was 13th in the 200 breaststroke. Chrissy Parsons also competed in finals in the 200 breaststroke. Matt, Chrissy, Teresa Parsons, and Devon Papallatoc - achieved lifetime best times in all of their events. Josh Williams swam lifetime bests in two events. That's nearly 100%!  Teresa and Devon handled swimming at a seperate pool away from their teammates and coaches very well.  Overall, we swam fast and had a lot of fun.  Make it your goal now to join us next year!

Dothan Water World Classic 2007

We did very well at the Dothan Water World Classic.  We had about 9 people out of 13 score and with those 9 people we ended up 3rd in the meet. Josh Williams won all 12 events.  Tonya Rasor won all but one and broke 8 meet records.  Ross Roberts and Devon Palpallatoc did very well.  In fact, Devon got 100% best times.  Lauren Palpallatoc and Devy Wymore each showed vast improvements in their stroke technique and each dropped their times in most of their events - as many as 30 seconds in at least one event.  Tonya, Josh, Devon, Ross, Shelby Baumgartner, Jessie Barth, Kirsten Palmertree, and Dan all ranked in the high point standings.  Tonya and Josh won. Devon got 2nd.  And of course, the team had fun at Water World water park.  Good job, team.

Maverick shines at ATAC

Maverick swimmers showed up proud at the ATAC meet 22-24 July.  Facing collegiate division one swimmers in the Senior age group and some very high powered 200 plus member teams, Maverick didn't win, but we did show our racing ability and our character.  Dan Kaster, Tonya Rasor, Ross Roberts, Josh Williams, Matt Schade, and Chrissy Parsons all raced extremely well in the championship finals heats with Ross, Josh, and Chrissy just smashing some previous best times at the right moment - under pressure in the finals.  Chrissy, Ross, and Tonya were all in the top 8 for high point.

Teresa Parsons, Devon Palpallatoc, Annie Elstro, and Jesse Barth also had their share of success, each making the finals in various events, achieving best times, and providing a lot of enthusiasm.

In fact, every swimmer made finals in at least one event.

Dan was 8th in his 200 breast.

Josh, Devon, and Ross made several new Southeastern Championship cuts.  Congratulations!

Dothan Spring Splash

We had a good start to our season!

100_4530 Pictured:  Jessie Barth swam in her first meet for our team and ended up winning 7th place overall for 13-14 girls.  Way to go, Jessie!

Other overall top 8 winners were Shelby Baumgartner, Matt Schade, Ross Spock, Ross Roberts, and Tonya Rasor.

Tonya_olivia_lexlee Olivia Johnson swam in her last meet for MAV.  She is moving to Ohio in May, but she finished with speed!  Olivia swam a best time in every event, even shedding 25 seconds in a 200!  We wish her the best of luck swimming up north.  Pictured:  Coach Tonya, Olivia, Lexlee (her best friend)

Tonya set meet records in 6 events.  Matt Schade set a meet record in the 100 breaststroke.  The relay team of Tonya, Matt, Ross Roberts, and Dan (unofficially) got the meet record in the boys 200 medley relay.  Meet director Dennis Thorpe congratulated the team after the race and said to Tonya, "Thatta boy, girl!"

Week of SES updates!

We did a GREAT JOB at Districts.  Our training seems to be paying off, but what is even better was the attitude and willingness to race displayed by Maverick swimmers.  We ran an average of 85% best times which VERY high percentage.  There was one stretch in the meet where we had almost 30 swims with straight best times.  KUDOS to all and we're sorry some of you missed the opportunity!

Congrats to Teresa Parsons, Ross Roberts, and Travis Thornton for picking up new SES cuts.  We're glad you can all come along!

ATAC Meet: We kicked...!

Maverick swimmers should be proud of the job we did this past weekend at a very tough meet.  The schedule of events was tough...some people swimming three 200's in under 40 minutes, or 4 100's in under 45 minutes.  Still, we showed our pride by dominating.  Teresa Parson's led us off with a best time in her 500 free and we proceeded to go 100% best times in the 500 until the last one.  We also swam and placed well in the 400 IM.  The next day we did fantastic, almost everyone getting into the finals for the 200 events; Kudos to Teresa for making the SENIOR girls 200 breast, top 8 by swimming lifetime best times in prelims and finals.  We won all the backstrokes for 13-over except for Senior boys.   Actually, we didn't just win, we DOMINATED the backstrokes.  Ross Spock was definitely a force to be reckoned with this weekend, deciding to win just about every event and going right by people on the last length if needed.  Josh swam back to back to back (to back) in all his events and just kept charging, pulling out some great swims just to prove how tough he is.  Chrissy is starting to scare people that usually beat her by a long way.  Her pushoffs were greatly improved, moving her right past the competition off each wall.  Shelby Clark added several sparks for us by getting out in front of her races and leading wall to wall.  Matt Schade surprised everyone (well, not us, just the competition) with a great 200 breast, taking third overall in Senior in that event, along with some very good other swims.  Tonya, the old lady, went a lifetime best in 500 free to prove she can swim distance as well as sprint; led the 200 free until the last length, ending up second after being seeded 6th, swam her 200 fly 15 minutes later for a third place, then was untouchable in her 200 back.  On Sunday, Coach Tonya showed everyone how to race when tired by literally dominating all the 100's...she was WAY out in front on them.  Cory Hill joined us on Sunday for some great swims in the 100's.  Finally, the old man coach had the stands on their feet at times because they were hoping he could actually finish his races!

Ross Spock took high point.  Tonya Rasor took high point.  Chrissy was third.

We had a great meet over a tough weekend.  Good job team!

GPAC Winter Invitational

We had a very large meet this past weekend hosted by Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club at UWF.  There were 650 swimmers.  Most teams had 30-100 athletes there.  We only had 10.

Out of those 10 we had 38 best times.  Ross Spock and Chrissy Parsons, along with a few others in select races, were the class of the meet.  Ross was first in tth 400 IM, 100 back, 200 Free, 50 back, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 IM, and 50 Free.  Chrissy was 1st in the 200 IM, 50 Back,  and 100 Back.
Second places were:
Ross: 100 Fly, 1650 Free
Chrissy: 200 Breast, 100 Breast
Tonya Rasor: 50 Fly

We had other top 8 finishes including:
Tonya: 8th 200 IM, 8th 1650 Free, 5th 50 Back, 6th 200 Back, 5th 200 Fly, 7th 100 Back, 4th 100 Fly, 8th 400 IM,
Chrissy: 6th 1650 Free, 5th 200 Back, 4th 100 Free, 5th 200 Free, 8th 400 IM,
Josh Williams: 4th 50 Back, 5th 200 Back, 6th 200 Fly, 7th 100 Back, 8th 200 Breast, 8th 400 IM,
Cory Hill: 5th 50 Back, 4th 100 Back,
Ross Spock: 5th 200 Fly,
Matt Schade: 8th 50 Breast

Good job team!

Mavericks Excel at Excel

Maverick swimmers excelled at the Excel Meet of Champs in Brentwood, TN.  In spite of poor ventilation and too many chemicals causing burning eyes and incessant coughing, the team had 87 % best times.  Tonya, Ross, and Chrissy had 9/9 swims in the finals.  Josh had 8/9.  Chrissy topped the team with 100% lifetime best times, concluding with a win and sectional cut in the 100 backstroke.  Ross won runner-up high point for the 13-14 boys, and while he didn’t win a race, as he said, he had “consistent second places.”  Ross had 4 lifetime best times and 4 additional Maverick Aquatics best times.  Josh is up to 8 SES qualifying times now, with 7/9 swims in lifetime bests.  Teresa also swam 7/9 lifetime bests.  Tonya swam 8/9 season bests.  Her 50 freestyle was only the third time she’s been under 25, and the first time since college, making it Maverick best.  Overall, the team swam surprisingly well, given the warm water and minimal time we have to practice.  Coach Dan did another superb job coaching.  These swimmers are consistent at practice, and they work well together.  They also have supportive, encouraging, and - need I say - fun parents cheering them every stroke of the way.
